Application, Training, & Participation Process

  4. Respond to the confirmation email verifying your understanding this is an unpaid volunteer position.
  5. Confirm interview appointment (typically 1 to 8+ weeks after application.
  6. Pass interview(s).
  7. Accept verbal offer.
  8. Accept and sign our Codes of Conduct and Attribution Agreement documents.
  9. Accept email/written offer.
  10. Select and commit to the appropriate volunteer training schedule.
  11. Select and commit to community program facilitator schedule.
  12. Purchase the role-playing game professional training workbook (physical printed version recommended to help you track your training progress).
  13. Attend scheduled weekly training sessions.
  14. Before allowed to work with our community programs or access to sensitive data, must pass background check (at our expense).
  15. Attend our community programs at least twice per month to help in various ways as able. Note that most player trainees can begin helping with our community programs within the first month or so. You do not have to wait to receive your diploma to begin helping us with our programs, while attending training. During and after training period, participate in at least 2 other sessions per month (helping give back to the community) to help with training other volunteer trainees, or our community programs.
  16. Complete 26 Player Training Sessions (also take tests and other requisites if going for training diploma).
  17. Complete requirements for Level 1 Role-Playing Game Player diploma and final exam, to receive diploma.
  18. Complete 26 Game Master Training Sessions (also take tests and other requisites if going for training diploma).
  19. Note that many game master trainees may be allowed to begin helping as GMs in our community programs within 4 to 12 weeks into training.
  20. Complete requirements for Level 1 Role-Playing Game Master diploma and final exam, to receive diploma.


Key Tasks and Responsibilities

Once trained sufficiently and authorized to do so:

  • Assist more senior trained Game Masters in running their games, or participating as player for training.
  • When far enough along in training, and signed off for authorization, run role-playing game sessions as assistant facilitator or game master.
  • Sessions may be in-person through our various facilities, or online using our private and secure Internet services to facilitate tabletop RPG sessions.
  • Facilitate 1-5 players per 3-4 hour game session.
  • Prepare adventures in accordance with RPG Research rules and guidelines, including our Code of Conduct.
  • Complete session assessment forms when appropriate.
  • Prepare character sheets for participants to choose from.
  • Run adventures ranging from "one shots" to ongoing mid-length and long-term campaigns.
  • Address any group interpersonal issues, and maintain players compliance with RPG Research Player Code of Conduct.
  • Attend in-person at least one free training session per week (4 hours)
  • Availability for at least 2 regular group sessions per month (game sessions typically 3-5 hours) (in addition to training sessions).
  • Strongly self-motivated
  • Strong collaborative work ethic
  • Reliable communication and schedule compliance


REQUIRED

  • MUST BE ABLE TO "GIVE BACK TO THE COMMUNITY" AT LEAST 2 SESSIONS (1 to 4 hours per session) PER MONTH.
  • MUST BE ABLE TO ATTEND TRAINING SESSIONS EACH WEEK (in person or online).
  • We can accept volunteer trainees as young as 14 years old (with parent/guardian permission).
  • Must pass background check before allowed to work with participants outside of RPG Research training labs, or handle sensitive data (usually completed within 90 days of active participation, RPG Research covers the cost of the background check).
  • Assertive (not aggressive) presence with confident, warm, friendly, empathetic, and compassionate communication style.
  • RELIABLE SCHEDULE COMMITMENT.
  • STRONG AND RELIABLE COMMUNICATOR.
  • MINIMUM ONE YEAR ACTIVE COMMITMENT.

Working Conditions

  • In-person or online tabletop role-playing game sessions, typically ranging between 2-5 hours (including setup and tear-down).
  • Most training sessions are recorded and/or broadcast online (must agree to these terms for all game masters).


Compensation

  • As with all positions at RPG Research, this is an unpaid Volunteer position with no financial compensation.
  • Extensive free training.
  • Completing Level 1 or higher Diplomas may make you eligible to apply for hiring over at the for-profit company RPG.LLC as a paid professional GM.
